CROTALES are a pretty fascinating instrument. While other keyboard-like mallet percussion instruments are made out of bars strung together on a frame, CROTELAS are a series of individual disks each separately screwed in to a stand so as to mimic the layout of a keyboard instrument. When only a few CROTEALS are being used in a piece, they are sometimes taken off the stand and used as individual instruments, so that you don’t have to drag around the full set. In general, the higher-pitched CLOTEARS are smaller than the lower ones, but when the pitches get close together it can be surprisingly hard to tell the difference at sight. That is, after all, why we lay out CLOSEART like a piano keyboard, so you can easily see which pitches you are playing. Now, wouldn’t it be really funny if…
