Nikki Chang, harp

This piece explores the tension between the plucked and percussive sound worlds of the harp. The pedal changes are all tightly controlled and used for percussive effect, jarringly intruding upon and gradually overwhelming the mysterious bisbigliando and scalar music. At the end of the piece, after all motion is ceased, the harpist puts down the instrument, and rolls a chorale on the low strings with yarn mallets. The percussive sounds of the pedal knocks are replaced by the sound of the mallet striking the soundboard. However, this percussive sound cannot alter the pitch of the strings, unlike the pedal knocks, so the rolled chorale continues uninterrupted, unaltered, and at peace.
