Sound Installation designed for the Glass Clouds Ensemble Residency on Governors Island from June-October 2026.

Layers

Governors Island stands upon literal layers of history: new trees growing on manmade hills built on top of a military base built on top of a colonial settlement built on top of an indigenous fishing camp built on top of innumerable previous ecosystems.

When you make art with paper – by writing on it, drawing on it, or folding it – you add a layer of history onto its own journey, from the trees it came from to the mills it was processed in to the canvas upon which you inscribe your experience.

In this installation, you can write, draw, and fold paper, responding to prompts about Governors Island’s past, present, and future, as well as your own past, present, and future. As you represent aspects of the island, the paper takes on the layered history and constructed nature of the island itself, a reflection of our profound transformation of the world around us.

As you write, draw, and fold, your actions add a new layer onto the soundscape, joining Marisa’s and Raina’s own scribbles, swishes, and songs.
